The chords fit perfectly, to my ear, and I presume that the words are as J.D. Souther wrote them, if only because the book notes the Warner Brothers copyright at the bottom of the first page. I know this song best from Linda Ronstadt's cover, on her album Heart Like a Wheel. The bridge (or whatever it is) is indicated as happening after the second verse only. It's hard for me to resist singing it after the first verse also, just because it is so gorgeous. The bass notes indicated at the beginning of verse one are just a hammer-on of the A string at the second fret, and then the open D string, producing the notes a b a d, preceding the D chord.
